→ Venture Scouts [ Or what ever the new name is for them! ]
Here is a little insight to each Corp and what each Corp stands for! ‘Corps’ in Scouts are similar to ‘ranks’ in the army. Each Corp is a level and each Corp has a syllabus. You must complete the syllabus to pass the Corp and qualify into the next one! There are four Corps; Cadet, Frontier, Explorer and Dushlán.
Cadet – the actual definition of a cadet is someone who is ‘training’ and so this first level can be seen as your ‘training to be a scout’
As a cadets, you are the beginning your journey in the troop. This is where you start learning the basic scouting skills which you will always use for the rest of your time in Scouts. Some of these skills include knowing how to light a fire, taking part on a camp and learning how to use an axe and saw.
At this level, Scouts is very new- you’ll be settling in, doing lots of things you’ve never done before, and making loads of new friends!
Frontier- often ‘Frontiers’ are defined as the limit of knowledge or the most advanced achievement in a particular field
Being a Frontier means you have stepped one tier up the ladder! You are all warmed up now and at this point, you should be looking to advance your skills! New challenges on your syllabus must be completed, for example, building a dining shelter, building an alter fire and learning some good first-aid skills.
Explorer- Explore! Do exactly as you are described!
Now you have two years of fundamental Scouting skills behind you. You should be starting to challenge your skills level now and to do more extreme activities! Take part in trips like Peak and Sionnachs. Now it is also time to take responsibility and to take an interest in your younger fellow-scouts. Help them learn and guide them. As an Explorer, generally, you can now be considered for a PL or an APL position.
Dushlán- This is the Irish word for ‘challenge’ and so your name really explains your goal.
You are now the highest rank in the troop and you will be well respected by your fellow-scouts. At this stage you should have acquired many scouting skills and have lots of experience behind you. Be a more independent scout- get out and do different kinds of trips and challenges with or without the troop! As a Dushlán you should be refining your ‘leader’ skills and you should now be well-equipped in using those skills to guide and direct the younger corps. This is your last corp before you move up to Ventures, so make the best of it!
